Hang Gliding Adventures on the Oregon Coast

Oregon Coast Hang Gliding Adventures

If you’re craving an adventurous and unique airborne experience, then hang gliding is the activity for you. Oregon’s big winds, beautiful coastline, and rugged landscapes create a perfect environment for one-of-a-kind aerial adventures.

One of the best places to fly is Southern Oregon Airsports in Grants Pass, located southwestern Oregon. This company offers a number of services including tandem flights, instruction, and equipment rental.

Cape Kiwanda

This pristine beach and stunning state natural area offer a wide range of activities, from fishing to sandboarding. Hikers can climb the tall dunes to enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and whale-watching tours are also popular. There are many local restaurants, shops and craft breweries, such as Pelican Brewing Company and Stimulus Coffee + Bakery.

The centerpiece of Pacific City, the cape is a big draw for surfers, hang glider enthusiasts, craft beer lovers and those looking for a laid back beach town vibe on the north Oregon coast. Atop the Great Dune, you can see sweeping vistas of Nestucca Bay to the south and Cape Lookout to the north. But don’t be fooled by the easy hike – it’s a steep climb! Staying in one of the many Cape Kiwanda rentals gives you front-row seats to all this coastal beauty.

Bald Butte

Every spring, the parking lot at Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge starts to resemble Black Friday at a mall as hundreds of hikers cram the trail through steep meadows of blooming arrowleaf balsamroot. But for those seeking a similar view of Mount Hood without the crowds, the hike up Bald Butte in the Parkdale area is a wonderful alternative.

Starting at the Oak Ridge Trailhead, the Bald Butte Trail traverses a serene woodland landscape before skirting another logging road area, where it becomes Trail 688. This section of the trail is actually more of a road than a trail, thanks to years of illegal OHV use and is often covered in ruts and loose cobbles.

Besides hiking, this quiet all-season trail offers wildlife viewing and exploration opportunities. Hikers can also visit the former lookout tower that perches atop the summit of Bald Butte. Alternatively, the nearby Gearhart Mountain Wilderness provides a variety of wilderness adventures.

Peterson Butte

Peterson Butte, Oregon, is a highpoint in the Willamette Valley. The peak is located on private property at Black Butte Ranch resort community in Central Oregon and is a popular hiking destination. The hike is strenuous and includes climbing over boulders to get to the top of the butte. There are panoramic views from the summit of the butte including Three Fingered Jack, Mount Jefferson, and other Cascade Range peaks.

The hike to the top of the butte is about a mile round trip, but it’s not for the faint of heart. The view from the top is worth the effort, but be prepared to take your time and expect a steep climb. You’ll be glad you did! Black Butte Ranch is a year-round vacation resort only 8 miles from the western town of Sisters and 30 miles from scenic Bend. Black Butte Ranch offers world class amenities and family friendly winter and summer recreation in the stunning Oregon mountains.

Grants Pass

Grants Pass is a bustling town with a historic downtown and a tight-knit arts community. The city is the county seat of Josephine County and offers a variety of activities, from white water rafting on the Rogue River to wine tasting in the Applegate Valley. It also hosts a number of annual events, such as Concert in the Park.

The mighty Rogue River runs right through the middle of town, with Riverside Park offering frontage on the river and plenty of room for picnics. It is also a popular place to launch a canoe or kayak. The Rogue River is part of the National Wild and Scenic River System, making it one of the most exciting places for a rafting adventure.
